K-12 school district administrators now have the ability to restrict artificial intelligence features directly within Google Search across student devices.
Digital safety company Lightspeed Systems introduced Google Search AI Controls within its web-filtering platform, enabling schools to block Google AI Overview summaries and its conversational AI Mode.
The integration of automated artificial intelligence into major search engines has created challenges for educational institutions. School administrators have cited concerns regarding academic integrity, student data privacy and the potential for AI models to surface unfiltered or inappropriate material. Because Google Workspace for Education lacks built-in administrative controls to restrict search modes or individual tabs, student queries often interact with AI engines without standard oversight.
Under the new tool, districts can route student searches directly to traditional web link results, bypassing the standard default landing page where AI Overviews are displayed. Administrators can also restrict specific categories such as shopping, images or video tabs, as well as embedded widgets and browser games.
Routing searches exclusively to standard web links ensures that a school's existing URL-based content filters evaluate every returned result.
The configuration is currently available for schools managing Chromebook and Apple iOS devices.
