Sandy Hook Promise Prevention Programs Stop 20 School Shootings
Anonymous tip lines and threat assessment training have prevented 20 planned school shootings across the country since 2018.

An anonymous tip reporting system (Say Something Anonymous Reporting System) and targeted school safety programs have helped avert at least 20 planned school shootings across the United States over the past eight years.
The non-profit organization Sandy Hook Promise reached the milestone following a recent intervention in Arkansas, where an anonymous tip submitted through the group’s reporting platform allowed law enforcement officers to stop a potential shooting before any violence occurred on campus.
The intervention highlights a growing emphasis on behavioral threat assessment and peer reporting during a critical back-to-school transition window. A national survey of 1,003 adults conducted by Marist Poll found that 96% of parents support training students, teachers and staff members to spot and report warning signs of potential violence.
In addition, 69% of surveyed parents expressed concern that critical warning signs could be overlooked by school officials, while an equal percentage reported worries regarding the mental health toll gun violence inflicts on students.
Safety experts emphasize that school shootings are preventable when communities establish clear communication channels and proactive response protocols. Anonymous reporting mechanisms are designed to allow students and staff to flag concerning behavior, threats or mental health crises early, giving school officials and law enforcement the opportunity to intervene long before an active crisis develops on campus.
