Colorado Nonprofit Pledges Grant Funding for Campus Security

Shield Our Schools Foundation will award at least $50,000 to help Colorado K-12 campuses fund security upgrades in 2027.

A Colorado nonprofit dedicated to campus safety has committed at least $50,000 in grants to help K-12 schools across the state address critical physical security upgrades.

The funding from the Shield Our Schools Foundation will assist public, private and charter schools in planning and implementing tailored campus safety measures. Individual awards typically range between $2,500 and $10,000, targeting security projects that fall outside traditional district budgets.

Schools maintain autonomy over which equipment and upgrades they purchase, while foundation board members with law enforcement and school safety backgrounds assist with technical assessments. Previous recipients have used the funds to upgrade aging hardware. D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School applied a $10,000 award toward modernizing its security camera network after the district declined to fund the project.

The foundation, established in 2023, has distributed more than $41,500 to Colorado schools to date, with 54 institutions nationwide currently seeking assistance.

Two application periods are scheduled for 2027:

  • Spring cycle: Applications open Jan. 15 and close March 31. Campus site visits and reviews run April 1 through July 31, with disbursements following in August and September.
  • Fall cycle: Applications open Aug. 1 and close Sept. 30. Evaluations run Oct. 1 through Nov. 15, with funding awarded in January 2028.
