Fort Valley State University Tightens Security Following Campus Shooting

New access rules, ID requirements, and visitor restrictions follow a Wednesday night shooting incident near campus housing.

Fort Valley State University has instituted updated campus access and visitor procedures following an Oct. 7 shooting near student housing.

The safety updates follow a late-night incident near the Wildcat Commons Clubhouse in which a non-student was shot. Campus police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are actively investigating.

Under the new measures, all students, faculty, staff and visitors must enter through designated access points and present valid university or government-issued photo ID. Security personnel may inspect individuals, vehicles and belongings, with ID checks applied to all occupants inside a vehicle.

Personal guest visitation is now restricted to daily hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Student hosts must meet guests at designated visitor gates, accompany them throughout their stay and ensure compliance with campus rules. Guests entering residence halls must temporarily surrender photo IDs to housing staff upon entry.

Visitors must park in designated visitor lots unless granted alternative clearance for official university business or events. Additionally, gate operations have been adjusted: the main gate and library entrance remain open 24/7, while the Huntington Hall and Carver Drive gates now close daily at 10 p.m.
