Apple Launches University ID Card Feature on iPhone

Students at three universities can now access their student ID cards on their iPhone.

Apple has added support for contactless student ID cards in Wallet. Earlier this month, students at three universities were among the first to enjoy the convenience of using their iPhone and Apple Watch to complete certain tasks around campus, such as gaining access to buildings and purchasing food on campus.

Students at Duke University, the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma can now leave their physical wallet behind has they can access their student ID's through their iPhones' Wallet feature. All students need to do is hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader anywhere physical student ID cards are accepted on and off campus.

"We are super excited about this, because we think for students at these schools, we're truly bringing [about] our vision of replacing the wallet—including the different types of cards and credentials," Vice President of Internet Services Jennifer Bailey said in a news release

Research done by Apple found that students use their ID cards up to 22 times per day and 80 to 90 percent of students at the schools Apple is starting to implement the program at use iOS.

"This gives you even more ways to use the technology that you already use and carry with you," Bailey said.
