In my years of assessing school security across the country, I have seen technology trends shift rapidly. Right now, the dominant focus in K-12 security is on communication and rapid notification.
Named in memory of Alyssa Alhadeff, Alyssa's Law is statewide legislation requiring all public school buildings to be equipped with silent panic alarms that immediately notify law enforcement when triggered. As of 2026, the law has been passed in 12 states, and federal-level recognition is underway. While the specifics of Alyssa's Law can vary between states, silent panic alarms primarily include wearable devices, mobile panic buttons and fixed alarms.
Driven by state requirements of Alyssa’s Law, districts are investing in mobile apps, silent panic alarms and wearable duress badges. This is a significant step forward for campus safety.
However, a holistic approach to school security doesn't stop with notifications or alerts; it is an enhancement as part of a broader picture.
What is the Value of Wearable Duress Devices?
Wearable panic, or duress, devices are usually wireless emergency buttons worn by staff members on lanyards that, when activated, instantly send a notification for help from anywhere on campus.
Location mapping enables responders (other staff members or local law enforcement) to pinpoint the area more accurately, helping eliminate delays in response times. Activation triggers can be customized to define the level or type of help needed, such as multiple clicks for student altercations or a long press to notify law enforcement and trigger campus lockdown.
The Importance of Hardware, Backed by Data
Data from the recent study by Texas State University's Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center, The Role of Locked Doors and Access Control in School-Based Active Shooter Events: An Analysis of U.S. K-12 Active Shooter Incidents, 2000–2025, speaks to the undeniable value of locked doors, rapid lockdown and compliance.
The physical barrier of a locked door remains one of the most decisive factors in preventing unauthorized access during an emergency. To that end, the study's very first recommendation is foundational: schools must ensure every classroom door has a functional lock that can be engaged from inside the room.
However, hardware is most effective if it is used correctly. A common thread in successful lockdown scenarios is that the door lock was properly deployed at the time of initiation. The study's fourth recommendation states that schools should "establish and enforce a culture of compliance with door-security protocols, including maintenance tracking and regular audits."
In the incidents analyzed in the report, properly locked doors served as the primary physical barrier that bought valuable time for law enforcement, prevented attacker entry, or both.
Though locked doors play a key role in school safety, time is of the essence. Staff must be able to engage the lock quickly enough. Recognizing this, the study's fifth recommendation urges districts to "invest in rapid lockdown capability through training, alert systems, and staff empowerment." When staff are properly trained in lockdown protocols, and if alert systems can work in tandem with locking hardware, schools achieve shorter threat-to-secure intervals.
Piecing it Together: Panic Devices, Classroom Locks and Rapid Lockdown
A holistic approach to school security does not rely on any single device, type of hardware or protocol. Instead, one goal is to integrate standalone devices into a broader system where the infrastructure works together.
Consider the following scenario: A staff member with a wearable panic device witnesses a perpetrator approaching the school's front door. They press the panic button, notifying both the front office and local law enforcement of the attack. However, there's no connection between the panic device sequence and the school's perimeter or classroom locking hardware.
The front office notifies the staff to manually initiate lockdown, but in the meantime, the attacker gains entry. Some classroom doors were equipped with magnets, and it was not enforced protocol for the schools' doors to remain locked from the outside during school hours. The median response time for law enforcement in a school shooting event is about three minutes. By the time law enforcement arrived, the incident was already over.
There are several key places in this scenario where a unified system may contribute to a different outcome, where a perpetrator was denied access or delayed long enough for law enforcement to arrive.
With a unified system, a pre-programmed, unique trigger sequence can initiate automatic lockdown (where electronic locks are used) at the same time law enforcement is notified. Enforced protocol of keeping classroom doors locked to the hallway and not using aftermarket devices or propping helps ensure that this secondary layer of defense is activated at the time of an incident.
Practical Next Steps and Key Takeaways
While technology gives us a head start, physical security provides a shield. The tie-in of the two, along with established and practiced protocols, creates a holistic security approach backed by research. And although we can never predict when an incident may occur, preparation is key.
