Omaha Police helped reinforce security Wednesday at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska, after a stabbing incident that took place on campus Tuesday.

A boy stabbed someone and cut himself on Tuesday afternoon at Burke, police said. Authorities were alerted at 2:28 p.m.

The campus was placed on a brief lockdown, and police ended up ushering students out of the building. Principal Gaye Lannan commended students for “their maturity and ability to follow important instructions from staff” during the incident.

In a letter to students’ families Tuesday, Lannan outlined how the campus would support students the next day.

“The Omaha Police Department will have additional officers at school to ensure a smooth transition back to class,” Lannan said. “We will also have additional counselors available to support students.”

According to Lannan, all Omaha Public Schools regularly practice safety drills, including lockdown procedures.

“The safety of students and staff is our top priority,” Lannan said.
