Nevada Higher Education System Launches Campus Safety Campaign

The systemwide "Eyes Open" initiative connects campus community reports with multidisciplinary behavioral assessment teams across eight institutions.

The Nevada System of Higher Education has launched a systemwide safety campaign encouraging students, faculty and staff across eight public institutions to report concerning behaviors to trained assessment teams.

The initiative, titled "Eyes Open," directs campus community members to an online portal to submit safety concerns. The program forms part of the system's broader Threat Prevention, Safety and Awareness Initiative, which focuses on early intervention and behavioral threat assessment.

Under the campaign, submitted reports are evaluated by Behavioral Intervention Teams established across the institutions. These teams comprise professionals from counseling, human resources, student support and campus police or security departments.

The multidisciplinary groups review reports to evaluate whether individuals require support services, if security measures are necessary or if no further action is required. System officials emphasized that submitting a report serves as an initial assessment step rather than a formal determination of a threat.

Development of the campaign follows ongoing safety efforts implemented across the state's higher education system after a December 2023 shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Participating institutions include the University of Nevada, Reno; College of Southern Nevada; Desert Research Institute; Great Basin College; Nevada State University; Truckee Meadows Community College; University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Western Nevada College.

The initiative is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
