Pennsylvania District Adds Four New Security Positions

Cumberland Valley School District is adding four new security positions to its staff.

The school board approved Monday the administrators’ recommendation to fill four unarmed security positions at the high school. The positions are three security officer II positions and a security supervisor position, according to The Sentinel.

The new positions will replace the previous district job descriptions for hall monitors. Those jobs were left vacant as those employees retired or were transferred to other areas within the school district.

Superintendent Frederick Withum III said the “whole new job descriptions” will require additional training and certifications.

"The security officers will be outside on arrival of the students, helping to greet students,” said Michael Sokolas, the district's director of student and public safety. “They'll be outside when the students are dismissed. They'll be roaming the interior of the facility, conducting preventative security checks throughout the facility."

The new security positions were created in response to a recent safety review by security company MG Tactical Advantage, Withum said. District officials had begun to upgrade campus security measures following the Parkland shooting on Feb. 14, 2018, which left 17 people dead.

Administrators “will start moving forward with the interviewing process” for the new positions, said Michael Willis, director of business and support services for the district.
