Kentucky College Invests in Security System

"We would be considered a soft target," ECTC’s Brent Holsclaw told WDRB. "So what we have to do is, we have to prepare ourselves."

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) is bolstering security on campus in light of increased incidents of violence on campuses.

"We would be considered a soft target," ECTC’s Brent Holsclaw told WDRB. "So what we have to do is, we have to prepare ourselves."

As part of their safety and security plans, ECTC is investing $10,000 in a security system called Fast Path.

"The local dispatch will have a copy of all the maps of the buildings on your campus," Holsclaw said.

Part of Fast Path’s method is to assign a number to every door, window and hallway on a map. If an intruder were to enter campus, dispatch would be able to use the numbers to tell first responders what door to enter and where to go.

ECTC officials feel that the Fast Path system of numbered maps will help eliminate confusion for first responders in an emergency.

"Every single second and minute matters," Holsclaw said.

The college aims to have the system in place in each campus building by mid-February.
