Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute is now using a key fob entry system for interior doors. The schools already required a swipe card with the user’s photo and job title for access to exterior doors.

Director of Safety Bryan Vaughn said that safety department administrators can secure doors in the whole district, even if they’re not currently on that campus. Vaughn said that the panic button system can unlock doors as quickly as it can lock them.

The cameras would be installed near the main entrances and offices, pedestrian gates and building entrances and exits on campuses. The cameras aim to identify those involved in illegal or unauthorized activity and to identify visitors on campuses where remote authorized entry is required.

All newborns at the hospital are now outfitted with a lightweight, self-adjusting bracelet that includes an RFID chip. According to Sue Snowdon, Program Coordinator of the Women and Child Care Unit, the RFID chip can be used to track the infant if a person leaves the unit with a baby.

Police had been called to the campus 18 times as of Feb. 1, and police reports showed that a teacher was hurt in October while trying to stop a fight between two students. In early February the school committee voted to create a subcommittee focused on the problems at the school.
