The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) has announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice to bring training on parents' rights in primary and secondary education to the group's 7,000 members.
The training will also be offered to affiliated school administrators and school security and safety professionals.
In a statement, NASRO Executive Director Mo Canady said increasingly contentious national debates have placed school resource officers in highly charged situations where they must make split-second decisions. He said those decisions should fall within clearly defined responsibilities and follow best practices grounded in specialized training.
NASRO said school-based policing requires preparation distinct from traditional law enforcement assignments. Its existing curriculum addresses behavioral threat assessment, trauma-informed practices, de-escalation and adolescent brain development, among other topics.
