A Kansas school district has integrated artificial intelligence gun detection and situational awareness software into its campus security infrastructure to protect students and staff from firearm threats.
Meade USD 226 deployed the ZeroEyes platform across its two schools, which serve approximately 350 students and 40 staff members. The district includes a high school and a combined elementary campus for preschool through eighth grade.
The software layers onto the district's existing digital security cameras to detect exposed firearms. When a potential weapon is identified, images are sent to an operations center staffed 24/7 by military and law enforcement veterans. If verified, alerts and intelligence regarding the visual description, weapon type and location are dispatched to first responders and school administrators within seconds.
Funding for the technology was secured through the Kansas Safe and Secure Firearm Detection Grant Program, which is administered by the Office of the Kansas Attorney General. District officials coordinated with local law enforcement and community leaders to prioritize the software implementation.
The new technology acts as an addition to the district's existing multilayered security plan. The campus safety infrastructure already features locked entrances, access controls, a comprehensive camera system and a system that alerts staff and emergency personnel during an active incident.
