Shooting at Nashville Private School Kills 3 Students, 3 Adults

National news reports that a 28-year-old woman shot and killed three students and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville, Tenn., on the morning of Monday, March 27, according to authorities. The Covenant School serves about 200 students in grades K–6.

Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said that she fired multiple shots on the school’s first and second floor and that police shot and killed her on the second floor. Aaron said that law enforcement received the first call at 10:13 a.m. local time and that the shooter was dead by 10:27 a.m., according to CNN.

The Associated Press reports that the shooter at The Covenant School is believed to be a former student and comes from the Nashville area. Police say that she entered through a side door used two “assault-style” rifles and a pistol. Aaron also relayed that there were no police officers present or assigned to the school because it is church-run.

According to CNN, the Nashville shooting is the 19th at a school or university this year that wounded at least one person. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden both offered condolences, while Biden called the shooting “sick,” “heartbreaking,” and “a family’s worst nightmare” while calling on Congress to enact gun safety legislation.

The shooter has not yet been identified, and CNN reports that police are in the process of analyzing the school security’s video footage of the incident.
