NYU Winthrop Hospital to Add Armed Security Guards

NYU Winthrop Hospital will add armed security guards beginning April 15, the hospital’s president announced March 26.

NYU Winthrop Hospital will add armed security guards beginning April 15, the hospital’s president announced March 26.

“After engaging with our own staff, as well as consultation with our internal security team, Nassau County police, and the review of multiple options, NYU Winthrop Hospital has decided to retain the services of an outside security firm to provide an armed security detail on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, throughout our main hospital,” said John Collins, president and chief executive officer of NYU Winthrop.

Collins said the uniformed guards will patrol the hospital 24/7 starting about April 15. The armed guards will not replace the services of the hospital’s own internal security team.

Earlier this year, hospital officials had said that NYU Winthrop was likely to start using armed guards in 2019.

Many hospitals on Long Island have either added armed guards or are planning to add armed guards in the near future.
