Tennessee Schools Add Police Officers to Campus Patrol

“I think it’s an added layer of safety and security that helps the students and parents feel more secure about where they’re sending their kids to school,” said Dr. Jerry Pyron, Principal of McNairy Central High School.

McNairy County Schools in Tennessee have added police officers to campus patrols thanks to a grant that pays for officers and deputies.

“We have an officer on campus every day,” said Greg Martin, Director of Schools for McNairy County.

The district has put together school security teams, focusing on the high schools, according to Martin. The teams include officers from the Selmer and Adamsville police departments and the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office.

“I think it’s an added layer of safety and security that helps the students and parents feel more secure about where they’re sending their kids to school,” said Dr. Jerry Pyron, Principal of McNairy Central High School.

Pyron believes the presence of officers on campus does more than increase security and safety for students and staff.

“It’s giving law enforcement an opportunity to be close to the students and to make sure they’re very familiar with the campus and have positive relationships with the community,” Pyron said.

Martin said they hope to expand the police team program from McNairy Central and Adamsville High School to other schools in the future.

The importance of investing in school safety cannot be overstated, but knowing where to start implementation of school safety features can be a challenge.
