Louisiana High School to Get Police Substation

West Monroe High School is adding a permanent office to its campus for the West Monroe Police Department.

A high school in West Monroe, Louisiana, will soon have an extra level of police presence for security. West Monroe High School is adding a permanent office to its campus for the West Monroe Police Department.

Police Chief Jeff Terrell said the high school already has a school resource officer and a Ouachita Parish deputy on campus, but the police substation is a further step toward increasing safety for students and staff.

"It'll be added police presence here at the high school," he said. "There are about 2300 hundred kids here at West Monroe High School, so you can never have too many police officers."

The police substation will be located on the first wing of the campus. The police department and school board will split responsibility for funding and maintaining the substation, according to Terrell.

“Just knowing that first responders are here, provides parents and the neighborhood peace of mind," he said.

Terrell said he hopes that the police presence on campus could help build the student-officer relationship, which is important.

"We're here to help them. We're here to protect [the students]. And if they have any issues they can come talk to us," he said.

The arrangement still needs school board approval.
