No Fatalities in French School Shooting

After a 17-year-year old student opened fire at his school last week, only minor injuries were reported – due in large part to a teacher tackling the shooter.

Armed with a rifle, two handguns and two grenades, a 17-year-old student opened fire at his school in Grasse, France – a quiet town in southern France known for its perfume industry – last Thursday. The situation could’ve been much worse, but a teacher at the school sprang into action as soon as he saw the student pull out his weapons. The teacher immediately went to the student and tried to reason with him, but the student still managed to fire his guns a few times before the teacher tackled him.

The school shooting took place in Grasse France, a small and quiet town in souther France known for its perfume industry.

As a result of the teacher’s heroic actions, there were no fatalities at this school shooting. Three students and the head teacher were the only ones who suffered gunshot injuries – all of which were minor. Six other students were treated for shock or for injuries sustained during a stampede of frantic pupils, trying to run out of the school during the shooting.

The suspect, who is in custody, has been identified as “unstable and fascinated by guns,” so the shooting has not been deemed as a terrorist attack. He had only shared pictured and videos of infamous U.S. shooting on social media prior to the attack.  U.S.-style school shootings are rare in France which is a country with low gun violence, according to NDTV News.
