A sniper in a fifth-story apartment fires 300 shots at a school just before dismissal. He had multiple automatic rifles and 1,000 rounds. Government reports wouldn’t consider this worst-case scenario attack to be a “mass shooting”—or even a “school shooting.” That’s a problem.

National news reports that a student was shot at a middle school in East Oakland, Calif., on Monday, Aug. 28, and that a 12-year-old suspect has been taken into custody.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District board has voted unanimously to fire Pete Arredondo, the police chief who helmed law enforcement’s response to the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary School.

As children go back to school for the new school year, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, in collaboration with the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), today released a report detailing new data about the rise of gunfire on school grounds and solutions to prevent school shootings and keep students and educators safe.
The most violent year to date for school shootings was 2021, with 193 people killed or wounded. Thus far this year, there have already been 145 victims. This is unacceptable and unconscionable.
