Virginia Governor Awards Security Grants to Several Elementary Schools

Several elementary schools will receive a grant from the state to be used for security upgrades and enhancements.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam awarded five Fairfax County Public Schools a state grant to be used for security upgrades.

The grant went to schools who are most in need of modern equipment, cannot afford the equipment or have a relatively high number of offenses, reported Reston Now.

One of the recipients is Dogwood Elementary School. They plan to use their more than $236,000 grant to pay for video monitoring systems, mass notification systems, visitor identification technology, two-way radios and other security enhancements.

The school will have to match 25 percent of the grant.

The grant was established  through the School Security Equipment Grants program, which was passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2013 following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Other schools that will receive the grant include Crestwood Elementary, Parklawn Elementary, Riverside Elementary and Whitman Middle School.
