Milestone Helps British Columbia School District Connect School Security Cameras

Centralized video management helps staff investigate incidents and coordinate security across 25 district sites.

Cariboo-Chilcotin School District 27 has consolidated management of its video surveillance network across 25 locations in central British Columbia, allowing staff to access footage remotely, according to a press release.

The district has implemented Milestone Systems’ XProtect video management software to oversee 78 cameras across a service area of about 28,000 square miles. Local integrator O-Netrix Solutions worked with the district on the transition.

According to Milestone, at Lake City Secondary, administrators receive notifications from HALO sensors when vaping is detected. A camera pilot lets them review corresponding footage.

Investigations remain the district’s main use for the software. Tests at 108 Mile House Elementary are exploring whether IQSIGHT camera analytics can identify loitering and prompt alerts and announcements over the school’s public address system.

The district is working with O-Netrix and IQSIGHT to address false detections before deciding whether to expand the analytics deployment.

Each location stores its own recordings. Connections to the district’s Williams Lake data center allow centralized administration and delivery of event notifications.

Headquartered in Williams Lake, the district enrolls about 4,600 students at 22 schools and employs nearly 1,000 staff members. Its next steps include refining analytics, directing alerts to appropriate personnel and adding coverage at schools that need it, said Kyle Riley, the district’s IT coordinator.
