Three students and one teacher were killed and two people were injured in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, according to AP News.
The victims included a 5-year-old child, an 8-year-old, an 11-year-old and one teacher. Two others, a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher, were in critical condition and transported to a hospital.
The 16-year-old suspect was found dead inside the school. He was shot by a community member who followed him into Silver Rail Elementary School after noticing him enter the building. The community member “engaged” the suspect, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said in a press conference.
The shooter gained entry to the school by firing at locked doors, Krantz said.
At 12:59 p.m., a person outside the building in a vehicle called 911 after reportedly being shot at multiple times by someone with a long gun.
Additional 911 calls were received in the minutes that followed, reporting a shooter entering the school.
At 1 p.m., dispatch notified law enforcement. At 1:01 p.m., officers told the school to go into lockdown. At 1:02 p.m., the first officers arrived at the elementary school. “Moments later,” Krantz said, an officer reported the suspect had been shot.
Bend is about 120 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon.
This is a developing story.
