The Consortium for School Networking urged the Federal Communications Commission to preserve and modernize the E-Rate program, opposing proposals that could reduce or eliminate the critical funding stream.
In official comments submitted to the federal agency, the K–12 technology leadership association argued that secure, high-speed broadband remains essential for school operations and modern instruction.
CoSN emphasized that while E-Rate has successfully connected the vast majority of American schools, ongoing funding remains necessary to maintain networks, replace aging equipment and meet increasing bandwidth demands.
The organization urged regulators to expand the program to cover cybersecurity solutions and backup connections permanently. While acknowledging recent pilot programs, the filing noted that network security requires continuous support as schools face rising digital threats.
The filing also called on federal officials to maintain a clear line between broadband infrastructure funding and classroom curriculum policies. Decisions regarding how technology is integrated into learning environments should remain with local school boards, educators and families, the group stated.
Existing federal frameworks, such as the Children's Internet Protection Act, already provide guidelines for online safety while preserving community control over educational content, according to the submission.
