Felon Wearing Body Armor Triggers Lockdown at N.C. Community College

National news reports that a felon wearing body armor was reported as an active shooter and sent a North Carolina community college into lockdown on Tuesday, June 7.

The Jackson campus of Southwestern Community College in Sylva, N.C., sent an alert at about 10:30 a.m. local time advising faculty and staff to secure students within the building and lock all interior and exterior doors. They sent an update at about 11:05 a.m. stating that “this is not an active shooter situation at this time.”

“Law enforcement officials tell us believe [sic] they are close to apprehending a felon who is on the loose. The subject initially fled to a wooded area behind Lowe’s,” said the school. “We will send another update within 15 minutes.” The school also said that the felon was donning body armor.

The lockdown was lifted at about noon, according to national news.
