On the campus of John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill., students installed six emergency call boxes as part of a student-led initiative.
“This is part of our strategic plan to upgrade the security and safety levels here at the college, so this is just one more layer that we put in place in that process,” said Public Safety Interim Director Stan Diggs.
The call boxes were funded by a grant that required students to complete the necessary work. Workforce development students poured the foundation, and IT and criminal justice students worked to install the software.
The 14-foot boxes allow students to call campus police at the push of a button. The button also activates nearby security cameras for further surveillance. The boxes are solar-powered, and they connect to the campus dispatch office via satellite and cellular networks.
