Security Guard Left Unloaded Gun in Campus Bathroom

"At no time was the safety of our students or staff in jeopardy, as the weapon was unloaded and quickly recovered," Superintendent Linda Rozzi said. "It was determined that the item was unattended for a very brief time."

A security guard at Babylon Jr./Sr. High School in Babylon, N.Y., was fired Tuesday after leaving a gun in a school bathroom, according to Superintendent Linda Rozzi.

In a letter, Rozzi states that school officials were notified that an unloaded, holstered weapon was discovered on the counter in a school bathroom after school hours. It was determined that the weapon belonged to a member of the security team, a retired Suffolk County police officer.

"At no time was the safety of our students or staff in jeopardy, as the weapon was unloaded and quickly recovered," the letter read. "It was determined that the item was unattended for a very brief time."

According to Rozzi, the security guard was “relieved of his duties” effective immediately.

"This individual breached district policy and we responded with zero tolerance," Rozzi said.

The district plans to review its safety and security protocols and “implement any changes necessary.”
