Heavy Police Presence on High School Campus Following Violent Incidents

Police officers were assigned to New Rochelle High School following three violent incidents on campus.

Police officers have be assigned to New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York, after a student was stabbed in one of the classrooms last week.

Mayor Noam Bramson and the school's superintendent Brian Osborne said at a press conference that new safety measures were necessary following a total of three violence incidents involving students on and off campus.

"Each of these incidents in isolation would be a matter of grave concern," Bramson, Osborne and other city officials said in a joint statement. "Coming in such quick succession, they pose an urgent challenge that commands our full attention."

The new security measures for the school include:

  • Uniformed police officers assigned to the high school as well as "to primary access points" around the school
  • The city is beefing up police presence around the campus at times when there is heavy student activity, including before and after school.
  • Access to the high school will be "strictly controlled and enforced."

The addition to the above security measures, there will be a "top-to-bottom, high-level review of all practices, procedures and policies that may be directly or indirectly related to student safety."

Building owners and facility managers increasingly rely on electrified hardware to enhance security while meeting accessibility standards. Among these technologies, electrified or motorized latch retraction locks are especially effective for retrofit projects where existing door and frame conditions complicate upgrades. Latch retraction capable locks combine security, accessibility and code compliance benefits, making them ideal for retrofitting fire-rated and non-rated openings in schools, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings and more. • Rethinking Campus Security From the Inside

For decades, campus security strategies focused on keeping threats outside school walls. But since the tragedy at Columbine High School, data has shown that many attacks begin inside the building, often in classrooms and corridors. This shift has prompted schools to rethink security from the inside and place greater emphasis on interior elements such as classroom doors. This shift is evidenced by a new generation of classroom door systems engineered to delay inside intruders and an ASTM standard that raises the bar on how these systems must be designed to defend against attack.
