Shooting at Nursing Home Leaves 3 Dead

Police chief and two nursing home workers were killed in a shooting on Friday.

A gunman on Friday shot and killed a central Ohio village’s police chief in an alley before entering a nursing home and killing two female employees, according to police.

Authorities found the gunman dead inside the nursing home in Kirkersville, a village of about 500 people about 20 miles east of downtown Columbus. It wasn’t immediately clear if the gunman had killed himself, despite the fact there was no exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the police.

As of Monday, the police revealed that the gunman knew one of the female workers and had a history of violence against her. It was unclear the motive behind the killings of the other two people, including Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, father of six children.

Chief Disario was responding to a report about a man with a firearm when he saw the gunman in an alley behind the Pine Kirk Care Center shortly before 8 p.m., Licking County Randy Thorp said.

Investigators believe it was then that the gunman shot and killed Disario before moving inside of the nursing home.

Sherriff’s deputies arriving to back up Disario found him dead in the alley and when they entered the nursing home they found two female employees shot and killed as well as the shooter.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says the suspect first took two passerbys hostage behind the nursing home to keep them from revealing his presence. When he shot and killed the police chief, these hostages ran away and were not harmed.

None of the residents inside the nursing home were injured. They were transferred to various hospitals Friday morning so that police could process the crime scene.
