Officer Shoots Armed Student at Milwaukee-area High School

An officer at a high school in Waukesha, Wisconsin, shot and injured a student who had a gun and pointed it at law enforcement authorities.

A 17-year-old student who allegedly pointed a handgun at police officers was shot Monday in a high school located in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack told reporters a student saw the 17-year-old male with the gun and reported it around 10:07 a.m.

Shortly after a school resource officer and other officers responded. After attempting to talk to the male to get him to remove his hands from his pockets, Jack said the teen removed the gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers.

One of the officers then fired at the teen striking him. He is in stable condition, Jack said.

“An officer was forced to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect,” the chief said. It was not clear how many shots were fired.

After the incident students at Waukesha South High School were evacuated around 11:15 a.m.  and the school was placed on lockdown, according to Jack.

Students said they took cover under desks and teachers barricaded doors after a drill was announced. They told reporters outside the school that they knew it was not a drill when they heard two or three gunshots.

Parents were waiting outside and hugged students as they evacuated the school, reported ABC6.

“This is clearly a superintendent’s worst nightmare,” the superintendent of the district, Todd Gray, said at the news conference. He said classes would resume on Tuesday.
