Grambling State University Responds After On-Campus Shooting

The incident took place on a Sunday night after a game of pick-up basketball on the university campus. One man was shot twice and taken to the hospital. Neither the injured man nor the suspect are GSU students.

Grambling State University officials are working to implement new security policies after an on-campus shooting involving two non-students.

The incident took place on a Sunday night after a game of pick-up basketball on the university campus. One man was shot twice and taken to the hospital. Neither the injured man nor the suspect are GSU students.

"It's not uncommon for non-students to be here on the campus to enjoy facilities that the university has," GSU President Rick Gallot said.

Now the longtime open campus is reevaluating their security and safety policies.

"In light of this and other events we have restricted the access to facilities like this to non-students," Gallot said.

Police patrol hours have been changed, and staffing has been increased. Gallot said campus police will be patrolling after regular school hours and keeping an eye out for trespassers.

"If they can't readily identify someone as a student they're asking for student ID's," Gallot said.

The university aims to minimize the potential for more incidents like this to occur by taking the opportunity “to sort of strategize in how we monitor, how we surveil, where cameras are pointed… what happens at facilities, like: when do they open, when do they close?" said Jovan Hackley, a university spokesman.

In the meantime, GSU officials plan to step up security with the help of local law enforcement before this year’s homecoming.

The victim is currently recovering, and the suspect has been arrested.
