Campus Security & Life Safety Summit Heading to Phoenix

The Campus Security & Life Safety team is taking its one-day Summit to Phoenix, Ariz.

Campus Security & Life Safety magazine is taking its popular one-day Campus Security & Life Safety Summit to Phoenix, Ariz. on September 6. The event is expected to draw campus security and safety professionals from all over the state and surrounding areas for networking opportunities and education on relevant topics such as active assailants, student/parent reunification and event security.

The Summit will kick off with a Keynote sponsored by Salient. Arizona State University Chief of Police Michael Thompson will talk about taking control online to keep secondary emergency incidents to a minimum in the case of an emergency situation on campus. Here's the keynote description from Chief Thompson:

When there is an emergency situation on campus, a chaotic mass panic online always follows. This online panic, mostly on social media platforms, can shape the public’s perception of an incident before your team has been able to disseminate factual information. Michael Thompson, the Chief of Police at Arizona State University, will speak on how to manage these “secondary incidents” online by getting out ahead of the false reports, tweets and Facebook posts. Chief Thompson will describe what facts and evidence should be withheld from the public as well as what information should be shared immediately and the methods for pushing factual reports out in a timely manner. Take control of what is being said about incidents on your campus by keeping these secondary online incidents to a minimum.

Following the keynote, attendees will be able to choose their next sessions. In the 10:30 time slot, John Meza, director of student affairs and district safety at Tempe Union School District will be talking on "Creating a Comprehensive Security Plan for Your Campus" while Sgt. Sonny Hudson from the Phoenix Police Department will be addressing "Law Enforcement Response to an Active Shooter Incident."

Later in the day, James Dorer, security director at Scottsdale Unified School District will be giving tips and tactics to creating a student/parent reunification plan while Arizona State University Assistant Chief of Police Patrick Foster will be talking about securing large events on campus.

Throughout the day, attendees will be able to mingle and network with each other and the Campus Security & Life Safety sponsors: Pivot3, Salient, AXIS Communications, Ruckus, Adams Rite/ASSA ABLOY, Aiphone, Alarm Controls/ASSA ABLOY, ASSA ABLOY, Blackboard, Law Enforcement Specialists, Oncam, Open Options, Vicon and DSX Access Systems, Inc.

At the end of the day, attendees will hear from Kirk M. Fitch, M.Ed. CPM, director of Clery Compliance at Northern Arizona University Police Department, on "Preparing for an Active Shooter." Fitch has an extensive background in law enforcement and public safety. He was Commander in the Department of Public Safety at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. Director Fitch has served over 30 years in the law enforcement profession, which includes being a Police Chief in Maricopa, Ariz. and Havre, Mont.
