UNLV Installs New Emergency Phone System

The University of Nevada at Las Vegas is stepping up their security with the installation of emergency communication centers.

The University of Nevada at Las Vegas is working to upgrade security on campus with the installation of emergency communication centers.

So far, the university has installed ten emergency phone systems on campus and police say there are at least eight more to be added.

"The new phone's are much taller, which is important to us," information manager specialist at UNLV, Robert Doyle said in an interview with local news. "They are about 14 feet tall, students can see them."

The emergency communication center can broadcast announcements and will soon live stream video to police services.

This isn't the first time the emergency phones have been on the UVLV campus, but police and students believed it was time for an upgrade. The move came as a result of the mass shooting at a community college in Oregon. Nine people were killed by gunman who open fired on campus.

The phones are expected to be up and running by the time school starts back for all students and the cameras and live streaming capabilities will be available mid-fall.
