On-Campus Shooting Hospitalizes High-School Student

A 17-year-old student was shot last week on the campus of Santee High School in Los Angeles, Calif., after a fight with another student. The student was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials, and the suspect in the shooting remains at large.
According to local news reports, the Los Angeles School Police Department reported the shooting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2. The school was put into lockdown while officials searched the perimeter for the suspect. Police said that they didn’t know his identity and that he was believed to have fled the scene in a black sedan. Lockdown at the school was lifted at about 3:15 p.m.
Los Angeles School Police Association President Gil Gamez said that the shooting was gang-related. “Two kids get into a fight, the loser of the fight produces a gun and shoots the other individual, hits them in the right leg,” he said. “Our officer goes over the air, the police radio, saying, ‘I’m applying a tourniquet to the leg.’ Fight is somewhat normal. Carrying a gun on campus probably all day long and shooting somebody is not.”
A second gunshot victim was discovered down the street near Maple Primary Center, a kindergarten facility which was also placed into lockdown during the same duration. The second victim was not a student, and the age and gender weren’t known. Authorities said that the second victim was unrelated to the shooting at Santee High School.
Officials described the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing dark blue clothes and green shoes and—contradicting previous information—riding a light blue bike.
