California Campus Increases Security with Vistor Management System

Jefferson Elementary School beefs up security with check-in system.

A California elementary school is increasing security on campus with the additional of a visitor management system. At the start of the school year, administrators introduced an Ident-A-Kid electronic check-in system. The system records anyone who goes onto a Jefferson campus, whether it is a parent, volunteer or vendor, and issues a personalized visitor pass.

"We just wanted to make sure our students were safe and we knew who our visitors were," said Nancie Castro, the director of human resources and curriculum. "The main thing is keeping our students safe. This is lowing our risk as far as harm from visitors."

People entering the school administration office are directed to the computer on the office counter and select their reason for being at the school. To get a visitor pass, they hold their driver's license up to scan and the system records their information and runs their names through the Megan's Law sex offender database.

Once they are cleared, they can verify their name and date of birth on the computer screen and then pose for a picture. The system issues a visitor's badge sticker with the time and data and the person's picture, name, reason for visiting and destination on campus.

The system also allows parents to check out their children early without the help of office secretaries and is able to issue tardy passes for students who arrive late to school, giving office staff the ability to focus on other tasks.
