UNC Charlotte to Launch External Review Following Fatal Shooting

University of North Carolina, Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois announced Thursday plans for an external review of the emergency response following the on-campus shooting that left two students dead and four injured.

University of North Carolina, Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois announced Thursday plans for an independent, external review of campus security and emergency response to the on-campus shooting that left two students dead and four injured.

On April 30, a former student opened fire during a class. The suspect was quickly captured and arrested, and is now being charged with two counts of murder, according to the News Observer.

According to Dubois, the campus went into lockdown in response immediately after law enforcement was notified of the shooting. He praised the brave actions of first responders, who “were running toward the sound of gunshots and administering first aid to the injured and dying.”

Dubois wants an “extensive” review of the campus’s response to the shooting, “to look at what went well and to examine and address areas for improvement.”

A UNCC spokeswoman was unable to immediately give details about the review.

According to police and UNCC officials, all of the students injured in the shooting are expected to recover.
