An eighth-grade student at Prescott High School in Prescott, Ark., was shot and wounded by another eighth-grade student Monday morning.

An eighth-grade student at Prescott High School in Prescott, Ark., was shot and wounded by another eighth-grade student Monday morning. The wounded student was flown via helicopter to Arkansas Children’s Hospital and was in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

The shooting took place about 9:14 a.m. Monday. The suspected shooter was arrested about an hour after he fired a single shot into his victim’s chest using a concealed handgun he brought to campus.

Neither the victim nor the shooter have been identified by police.

The incident was responded to by Arkansas State Police and other area law enforcement agencies.

“The district’s school resource officer was in the building and immediately able to assist. The district is fully cooperating with the ongoing law enforcement investigation,” the district said in a statement. “It appears this was a premediated attack specifically targeting the injured student, who was airlifted to a medical facility for immediate treatment. […] No other injuries were reported.”

Campuses in the Prescott School District released all students for the day at 10:30 a.m. Prescott schools and schools in the neighboring Gurdon School District both entered lockdowns following the shooting, and no one was allowed to enter or leave their campuses.

The district said that it would work with law enforcement to review safety and emergency protocols and that counselors would be available to speak with students.
