Grambling State Makes Security Upgrades

Following an on-campus shooting involving two non-students, Grambling State University in Louisiana has made changes to its security and safety policies.

Following an on-campus shooting involving two non-students, Grambling State University in Louisiana has made changes to its security and safety policies. The university posted the list of updates to its website.

The university has moved its University Police station and dispatch center to a new location and added ten new officers to the force to a team total of 24 trained police officers. There will be more officers patrolling on bicycles, and beginning November 1, all Grambling State University police officers will wear fully operational body cameras as part of their standard uniforms.

The University Police can now be contacted quickly via Grambling State’s mobile app. In addition, patrol routes and schedules have been adjusted to add more University Police support after class hours and improve collaboration with the City of Grambling Police Department.

The visitation policy will be more strictly enforced to increase safety on and near campus. Officers on patrol may ask students or visitors to show their campus ID.

As part of routine maintenance, campus security cameras have been updated and campus call boxes have received updated receivers and speakers. Officials are also working with facilities and IT teams to improve lighting on campus, and have added new lighting to six high-traffic areas thus far.

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center has provided their 2018 active shooter training resources to the entire police force.

In their notice to the campus community, Grambling State emphasized how useful and important feedback from the community has been in increasing security and safety.

“From these to sharing at the residence hall meetings to SGA’s “Talk to Me Thursday,” your input is vital as we continue to improve campus safety. You are helping us drive these and other initiatives and are the motivation as we continue to grow.”
