North Carolina Schools Add Security Measures with New Funding

Swain County school leaders plan to use $4.7 million in state grant money to help build high school classrooms and beef up security.

More than a dozen North Carolina school districts received millions in state grant money. Out of the total $141 million available to North Carolina schools, Swain County will receive $4.7 million.

Swain County is designating the money for school construction and security. School leaders told local news stations that they were going to be building high school classrooms to accommodate for increasing enrollment as well as install a new entrance for the high school that allows for more security.

"[The grant money] will allow us to, first of all, change the entrance to the high school so that we have more of a single point entrance for security," superintendent Mark Sale said.

The grant money will help add buzz-in locks and cameras at the high school as well and Sale said this is just the beginning and there will be even more funding needed to increase security at all of the schools in the county.
