Hospitals in India to Receive Fire Safety Audit

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has recently ordered fire safety audits for government hospitals due to the poor firefighting systems that are currently in place; some of the systems are 60 years old and/or non-functional.

“The hospital administration has many a times requested the JKPCC to make the system functional but nothing has been done. We are managing on our own by keeping fire extinguishing cylinders,” said a senior official in the hospital.

After receiving several reports of the poor condition of the fire systems at the some of the premier hospitals, the Chief Minister issued the orders for fire safety audits. One 900-bed hospital and another specialty hospital have systems that no longer function properly. According to another report, a 200-bed pediatric block of a hospital doesn’t even have smoke detectors.

Dr. Ramesh Gupta, Superintendent of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), Jammu, who confirmed receiving the order for the fire safety audit says he has written to the director of fire and emergency services for conducting the audit.
