School Shooting Sends One Student to the Hospital

A student was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in a hallway at the Rockville, Maryland, high school; police say another student is in custody and there is no ongoing threat.

One student was shot inside Thomas S. Wootton High School in Maryland on Feb. 9, initiating a lockdown. Police said another student has been arrested.

A student was found with a gunshot wound in a school hallway and taken to a hospital in stable condition, Rockville City police said the suspect is a fellow student and has been identified and arrested near the school a short time later. The victim and suspect have not been named.

"At this time, there is no further threat to public safety,” Rockville City police said.

Montgomery County officers responded about 2:15 p.m. to reports of shots fired at Wootton High School in Rockville, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Authorities later confirmed that a student was in custody in connection with the shooting and that the campus remained locked down as the investigation continued.

“We’re just still in lockdown, the police are here, the kids are all in the classrooms,” said Tabitha Davis, school administrator.

There is no further threat to the public, Rockville City Police Department said in a social media post just before 4:30 p.m.

All roads were closed to Wootton High, about 15 miles northwest of downtown Washington, D.C. Just before 3:30 p.m., the police department posted that students who ride a bus will take their regular routes home. Students were dismissed just before 5 p.m.
