Joseph Souza Appointed as Director of New Physical Security Department

University of Florida recently announced their addition of a new Business Affairs department, which will be called Physical Security. Joseph Souza has been appointed as the director of this new department.

Joseph Souza has been appointed as the director of University of Florida’s newest Business Affairs department – Physical Security.

After a campus study regarding campus safety and security, which was conducted from 2015-2017, it was recommended that the university create the department to enhance the overall safety and security of the school.

The study also recommended some security initiatives that now are part of the Security Master Plan. These will be implemented beginning in Fall 2019.

Souza was previously the Assistant Director of the Department of Security at the University of Central Florida. In his previous role, he planned, designed and oversaw construction of UCF’s first Global Security Operations Center, as well as upgraded and maintained video surveillance and access control management.

Now, he will oversee security software for cameras, enhance the coverage of security cameras across UF, and put automated electronic access controls on buildings. Moreover, he will work in conjunction with UF Police to install Automated License Plate Readers on campus and will help add features such as encryption and proximity-based access controls to the Gator1 card technology.
