A loaded firearm was confiscated during a random security screening Wednesday at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools summer school site, according to officials. It is the first time a gun has been found during these routine searches since they started in January.

According to the district, the weapon was discovered by a firearms detection dog searching through students’ bags.

The screening, which took place Wednesday morning, is part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ new safety measures announced in November. The screening was conducted at Rocky River High School, which hosts summer school for high school students from multiple district campuses.

The security screenings take place at randomly selected schools. Backpacks are searched and students are wanded for weapon detection. All of the Rocky River summer school students were wanded and their personal items searched.

Officials said one person was taken into custody and is being charged. Students and staff are all safe and there was no threat of harm. District police also found and confiscated a non-lethal, Taser-like device in the screening Wednesday.
