Student Taken into Custody After Bringing Gun to Portland School

A student was taken into custody by the police Friday after bringing a shotgun into Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon.

A student who brought a shotgun into Parkrose High School on Friday was tackled by the football coach and taken into police custody, officers said.

According to investigators, an “adult male” student entered a Parkrose High School classroom with a shotgun. The suspect was confronted by football coach Keanon Lowe, who tackled the suspect.

The school was placed in lockdown after a person with a gun was reported present on campus.

“At some point, a staff member at the high school confronted him,” police said in a statement. “A Portland Police School Resource Officer and other officers arrived and immediately entered the school and found the staff member detaining the subject in the hallway.”

Police searched the school but found no additional suspects and no one injured. It’s not yet been determined whether any rounds were fired by the suspect, investigators said.

“Incidents such as the one that occurred today strikes the worst fear in the hearts of students and parents,” Police Chief Danielle Outlaw said in a statement Friday. “The officers and school staff worked together to respond quickly and ensure the safety of all involved. I commend the school staff member who displayed quick actions and bravery when he confronted the subject.”

The school’s prom took place as scheduled on Saturday. The school confirmed that classes would resume as usual Monday, with counseling support available and an enhanced security presence o provide a sense of comfort to our students and staff,” according to the superintendent.

"I want to thank everyone for their incredible patience as district staff worked diligently through the reunification process," the statement read. "Our staff and community were incredibly supportive and generous in their efforts. An additional thank you to our regional school districts and Trimet who provided staff and buses to help reunify our students with their families."

Parkrose School District officials are working with the FBI and the Portland Police Bureau on the investigation.
