Nevada School District Considers Safety Recommendations

The district’s safety measures were evaluated by an advisory council that included police officers, community members and CCSD staff. The list of recommendations was released Tuesday, and Superintendent Jesus Jara decided which suggestions the district should implement immediately.

The Clark County School District has released a list of safety and security recommendations following an evaluation of their campus safety measures.

"So far we've had 11 guns confiscated on campus and we had 13 for the whole year last year so we knew we had an increasing problem we needed to address," CCSD spokesperson Kirsten Searer told KSNV.

The district’s safety measures were evaluated by an advisory council that included police officers, community members and CCSD staff. The list of recommendations was released Tuesday, and Superintendent Jesus Jara decided which suggestions the district should implement immediately.

"More school police officers, having lanyards that students would wear. So, we’re looking at a variety of tactics," Searer said.

In addition, Jara is considering adding eight k-9 units trained to detect firearms. The council also recommended adding walkthrough metal detectors to campuses, but Jara isn’t focused on that right now.

"Dr. Jara did implement a random weapons search with handheld metal detectors that we have been engaging in for at least a few weeks now,” Searer said. “In terms of actual walkthrough metal detectors, when you look at national safety studies, that's not one of the recommended uses of facility funds."

School officials discussed the recommended updates in their board meeting Wednesday. Once they’ve decided which recommended changes to put into place, they want to see them implemented within six to twelve months.
