Michigan District Addresses Security Concerns after Violence at Basketball Game

Superintendent Josha Talison said he is working to get uniformed police officers or sheriff’s deputies present at all after-school activities.

Ecorse Public Schools is addressing security concerns after several fights broke out Friday during a boys’ basketball game at Ecorse High School. School officials canceled classes both Monday and Tuesday due to safety concerns.

"It was more than just a regular fight," Superintendent Josha Talison said. "We had adults engaging with students, fighting."

One mother told ClickOnDetroit that her son required 16 staples due to an injury to his head. She fears for her son’s safety, and other parents are also concerned.

Talison said security was present at the game, but there were no uniformed police officers or metal detectors. There are video cameras in the school building, but they didn’t capture footage of the corridor into which the fights moved from the gym, he said.

"We're getting cameras installed tomorrow for that area, because of the situation," Talison said.

Talison said he is working to get uniformed police officers or sheriff’s deputies present at all after-school activities.

The district said the emergency closed days were used to enhance its safety plans.
