Suspect Dead, No Other Injuries Reported in Shooting at Indiana Middle School

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and no other students were hurt, according to Indiana State Police. Law enforcement arrived on the scene quickly because they had received a tip about a possible threat before the shooting.

A teenage suspect shot and killed himself in an incident at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, Ind., Thursday morning, according to police.

The school district tweeted Thursday morning that there “has been an active shooter situation at Dennis Intermediate School. At this time, the building is secure.” The district put all Richmond Community Schools on lockdown during the incident.

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and no other students were hurt, according to Indiana State Police. Law enforcement arrived on the scene quickly because they had received a tip about a possible threat before the shooting.

“Officers received information this morning that there could possibly be someone en route to commit a violent act at Dennis Intermediate School here in Richmond,” Sgt. John Bowling with Indiana State Police told Fox 59. “Officers responded rapidly. They did confront a suspect outside the school. Shots were exchanged, and the teen suspect decided to take his own life.”

Bowling said no students or officers were injured during the incident.

“[No one was hurt] mainly because someone knew something, and they said something,” Bowling said. “They warned police and police were able to respond. The school was able to follow procedures to help protect students.”

Students at Dennis Intermediate School were loaded onto buses and moved to Richmond High School, where they’ll be reunited with parents after being accounted for.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the active shooter report, including the Richmond Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police and Reid Health trauma services.

Richmond Community Schools said all other schools in the district would resume classes and have normal dismissal times today.
